Clé Abhaile with Gavin Byrne

Gavin Byrne

The March edition of the Clé Abhaile online singing session takes place on Monday March 4 at 8pm (Irish time) on the Zoom platform. Our featured performer for the evening will be Wexford’s own Gavin Byrne – a fine singer and a dedicated collector of traditional songs – especially those sung in the South East.

While March 8 is International Women’s Day, March 4 is also significant in the lives of two remarkable women – the great South African singer and activist, Miriam Makeba (born on March 4, 1932) and the first female US Cabinet officer, Frances Perkins (appointed Secretary of Labour on March 4, 1933). March 4 also marks the anniversary of the 1804 Castle Hill Rising in New South Wales, the first rebellion in Australian history. It was undertaken by Irish detainees (mainly political prisoners) who took up positions on Vinegar Hill – undoubtedly named after the 1798 battle site near Enniscorthy in County Wexford.

So if you would like to sing topical songs, there are many possible themes. But, of course, these are suggestions not prescriptions!

All singers and listeners will be welcome.

Join us at 8pm (Irish Time) to sing, play or listen on Zoom in an evening of songs by or about women – and perhaps one or two other subjects!
