The Clé Club’s monthly online Zoom session – Clé Abhaile – will mark the 135th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding labour organiser, Joe Hill. Emigrating to the US from Sweden, Hill became an union activist with the Industrial Workers of the World – and was renowned as a composer of labour songs often satirical in tone. Hill was well known to Irish labour leaders, like Jim Larkin and James Connolly. Joe Hill’s execution in 1915 on the basis of a trumped up murder charge not only confirmed his legendary status within the labour movement but also inspired the classic anthem, “I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night.”
This session will include songs and poems written by and about Joe Hill as well as other workers’ struggles with an additional focus on Woody Guthrie who died on October 3, 1967.
The Zoom session – which will also feature a sing-around of participants who wish to perform.
Monday, October 7, 8.00pm (Irish time)
